UGH I HAVE SO MANY FEELS ABOUT THIS LINE
because it's heartbreaking and mean and bitter and completely unforgivingly accurate
because Rory has always been the one companion that has never idolized the Doctor
(even Donna with all her yelling has always believed that the Doctor will always save them in the end)
But Rory knows the truth
which is the hard fact that being a companion is brilliant and wonderful but will also always change you
and not always for the better. You take more risks and youwant to impress the Doctor with your cleverness - you want to PROVE you're The Best
that the Doctor didn't make a mistake in choosing you as a companion
but when it comes down to it
yes you're more worldly and always going to put others first and try and save the day
but you're also going to be the reason that people die; you're going to be the one who was too late to save them.
The Doctor hates himself for a reason and after you're a companion for too long
a part of you will start to hate yourself as well for all the moments where you just weren't fast enough
or all the times when you just weren't clever enough etc.
Being a companion isn't just sunshine and daisies and time travel and running hand-in-hand with the Doctor
It's hard and painful and most people don't see that - but Rory always has
