THE ANGSTER GAMES: Round Six

Amelia, look at me. You know this is all just a story, don’t you? You know there’s no such thing as stars.

“Rory! Please!” Amy’s voice called after him but Rory ignored it, throwing his hands up in frustration. “I hate this!”
Her yell trailed after him, but he just kept walking. For the first time ever, Rory Williams was walking away from Amy Williams - well, she’ll be back to being Amy Pond soon enough, he thought viciously - and not looking back. He loved Amy and he always would, but he’d had enough. After everything they’d been through, he had just wanted to move on with their lives but for some reason, Amy just kept holding on to the past. She was stuck in a stasis that Rory just couldn’t seem to break her from and it broke his heart. He didn’t blame her (after everything they’d been through, how could he?) but he just wished that things could have been different.
The only thing that had kept them going for a while were regular visits from River, but those had ended. They hadn’t even seen River in ages, not since the last time she’d been around, gushing about how the Doctor took her to see the singing towers in Darillium and how gorgeous the night had been; he missed her, his daughter, and so did Amy, and he knew the strain it was putting on them both.
A part of him wanted to resent the Doctor for everything, but he knew he couldn’t. After all, the Doctor had been a huge factor in getting him and Amy’s relationship to work. But the Doctor was gone and all they’d been left with now were the tattered remains of a broken relationship and the threat of divorce papers floating around them.
Rory stopped in his tracks, rubbing a hand over his face and sighing. Looking around, he saw pub near him and estimated that he’d walked at least five blocks without noticing. Sighing again, he pinched the bridge of his nose. He missed Amy already. Amy, his Amy, his wonderful, strong Amy - his wife, Amy. He’d calmed down some now, after that fight, and now all he wanted was to hold his wife in his arms. Every relationship had issues, he knew that. They had considerably more complicated ones than other people, of course, but he knew how strong they were. They could work through this. He wasn’t willing to give up yet. She was too precious for him to lose.
Turning to make his way back to their house (their home), Rory noticed a statue near him, one that he would swear wasn’t there before. It was an unusual statue, an angel covering its eyes. It irked him, for a reason he couldn’t name. Rory stared at it. The statue did nothing.
He blinked.
——-
When Rory didn’t come home that night, Amy cried. He’s left me, she thought. He left me and he didn’t even say goodbye.

Anonymous: I agree with the Amy thing. I wasn't too fond of her, but I loved Rory. Amy seemed more like a pet, needing to be rescued, unlike the past companions who really saved the Doctor. Just my opinion...

I very much disagree with this, though I respect your opinion. Amy is a strong character, and I don’t see her portrayed as a “pet” at all. Sure, the Doctor needed to rescue her, but the Doctor does that with most of his companions. In fact, Series 1 was pretty much Rose wandering off and the Doctor coming to save her. But Rose grew, matured and started to come into her own, and I believe Amy goes through a similar process. Amy becomes vastly important to the Doctor; she’s not his ‘pet’ - she’s his best friend, his shoulder to lean on, his tell-me-what’s-wrong-and-though-I-probably-can’t-actually-help-I-will-listen-and-always-be-there-for-you stable rock. I’m not an expert on Amy (I’ve only seen Series 5 and 6 once), but if I recall correctly, there was a moment in the Series 5 finale where, oh yeah, Amy saved the world, the Doctor, the TARDIS, her timeline and pretty much the whole universe, just with the power of her mind.

If that doesn’t scream ‘badass’ to you, then you’re missing the mark, my friend.

“Wake up, Amy! I made you breakfast in bed!”
Amy opened her eyes to see Rory standing above her, holding a tray of pancakes, sausage, and eggs. Still half asleep, she mumbled confusedly, “What are you even going on about?”
“I made you breakfast. In bed. Not only that, but I also got you this!” He set the tray on the table next to her before reaching in his pocket and pulling out a small gift-wrapped box. His smile seemed to fade slightly as Amy simply stared at him. “Well… aren’t you going to get up? I mean, you don’t have to or anything, but… Do you not like it? I can leave, if you want.”
Amy blinked slowly before sitting up in bed, before rolling her eyes at him. “Yeah, it’s great. Now sit down with your stupid face,” she said, patting the place next to her.
“And you won’t kill me for siding with the Doctor?” He asked hesitantly.
“And I won’t kill you for siding with him.” Amy confirmed, smiling. “Now gimme this present!”

Anonymous: Amy Pond is a whiny ass whore, Rory deserves better, i hate Amy pond.

Okay, let me first say that it’s fine that you don’t like Amy Pond. Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion.

However, please don’t come into my ask and share your hate, because I really don’t want to see it. I think Amy is an absolutely brilliant character and though I may not have been a fan of her complete lack of character development in series 6, she’s still wonderful. Now, let’s break down your whole reasoning for hating Amy, part by part and see if I can change your mind.

1. Whiny-ass

How is Amy whiny? Is it because she is mad at the Doctor for not finding Melody? Because honestly, in her position, I was amazed that she wasn’t more worried. She just lost her daughter, her only child, to a band of (for lack of a better word) terrorists who only took her in order to train her to be an assassin. Were Amy to have never met the Doctor and just have married Rory, Melody would never have been in trouble (and would have never been a child of the TARDIS), so its understandable that Amy’s counting on her best friend - the only person in the whole universe with the resources to get her child back to her - to help. So in that respect, I forgive any ‘whinyness’ she might have, because in her place, I would have been tearing up the world to get my daughter back.

If you think she’s whiny because of her older self in The Girl Who Waited, there was a very valid post going around about that some time ago (I believe the DW blog even reblogged it). Amy was forced to spent 36 years alone, constantly fighting for her life every day,  waiting for the Doctor and Rory to come save her like they promised. She didn’t choose it, like Rory had. She was forced into it. Furthermore, in those 36 years, she worked out every kink that Apalapucia had, from where the cameras couldn’t see her to how exactly the robot-thingies operated and how to defeat them, and even what the Interface responded to. Hell, she even taught herself how to make a sonic probe. That’s extremely impressive to me. I’m a civil engineer and I’m not sure I could have figured that out, let alone Amy who I don’t even think has had higher schooling? That we know of, at least. And when they asked her to help present!Amy, Future!Amy did it, even though her Future!Amy didn’t do it for her. That’s an incredible sacrifice on her part, mostly when she knows that the chances of her actually getting out are not good (after all, the Doctor always lies). Considering everything she went through, I would say Amy was very much not whiny.

If you think she’s whiny because of her behaviour in The Rebel Flesh/The Almost People, then let me point out that almost everyone in that whole group had the same mentality. The episode was even called the almost people; they were lead to believe that the flesh they were inhabiting wasn’t real, and so it was easily disposed of. So it’s not whiny of her to complain that she can tell the difference between the two Doctors and that the flesh Doctor isn’t the same. It’s just prejudice, something that ingrained in her (and everyone else) by the surrounding circumstances. Was she wrong in that respect? Yes. Did she realize it and apologize for it? Yes, she did. Not many other people in the episode did that, so cut Amy some slack.

I honestly don’t have the time to go through and explain how Amy isn’t being whiny in all of the other episodes, so let me just say this. What you see as Amy being whiny, I see as Amy acting like every other person would have done in her situation. Yes, Amy has flaws, but so does every other person in the world. Nobody’s perfect.

2. Whore

How exactly is Amy even a whore? As far as we know, she’s only had one boyfriend and that was Rory. And if she’s had other boyfriends or slept with other guys, then what exactly is wrong with that? Does sleeping with more than one guy in your life make you a whore? Because if you think that, Anon, then I honestly have nothing else to say to you. If you’re that prejudice then congratulations. I’m not as eloquent/knowledgeable as Cate and thus cannot give you a five-paragraph essay as to why you’re views are entirely ridiculous on the matter of sexism, but I can say that I’m impressed with your complete close-mindedness.

If you think she’s a whore because she pretty much threw herself at the Doctor on the night before her marriage, well just know that many people would do the exact same thing in her position. She grew up idolizing the Doctor and forever waiting for him to show up.  When he finally does on the night before her wedding, she probably took it as a sign from fate that she should be making a move. Plus, Amy is a strong, confident woman and took her chance to kiss the man of her dreams (literally) that she’s been obsessed with ever since she was eight. Hell, it’s the Doctor. There are not many woman that wouldn’t have made out with him if they had the chance. Mostly if he’s as hot as Matt Smith, David Tennant or Christopher Eccleston. Should she have kissed another man before her wedding night? No, probably not. Do I blame her for it? Hell no. I would have totally made out with Matt Smith too. I’m sure Rory thinks about kissing the Doctor too.

If you think she’s a whore because her job was a kiss-o-gram, then let me remind you that kissing people does not equate having sex with them. A whore is someone who has sex for money. Hannah Baxter/Belle was a whore (and a damn amazing woman as well). Amy Pond, however, is not a whore.

3. Rory Deserves Better

It doesn’t really matter what you think, because Rory loves Amy and he deserves to be with the woman he loves. Either way, I don’t see why he wouldn’t deserve Amy. Amy is a strong, beautiful and incredibly caring person. She feels guilt over killing Madame Kovarian in a time that no longer even existed, even though Kovarian stole her daughter and trained her to kill her best friend.

Furthermore, she loves Rory so very much. She sobs violently every time she watches Rory die. She crashed the car in Amy’s Choice because she refused to live in a world where Rory didn’t exist. In Cold Blood, the Doctor even had to restrain her to stop herself from rushing to Rory and trying to help him, even if it meant being eaten up by the crack and being erased from existence herself.

Amy and Rory have a fantastic and epic love; they deserve each other.

4. I hate Amy Pond.

I understand having favourite and least favourite companions. I understand disliking certain characteristics or traits of companions. I understand not being able to connect with some companions as much as you can with others.

What I don’t understand is being able to hate a companion.

THE DOCTOR ONLY CHOOSES THE BEST. EVERY SINGLE COMPANION HE HAS IS BRILLIANT IN THEIR OWN WAY.

You don’t have to love them, but you have to respect them all. Traveling with the Doctor isn’t always fun; sometimes its dangerous and scary, but every single companion has proven themselves over and over again, Amy included.

Stop hating, mostly in my damn ask box.

Amy was going to kill Rory. He had not stopped chuckling to himself the whole time he had been over and refused to tell her why. He had showed up at her door with his books under his arm and a mix CD directly in front of his face. “I brought study music!”

Amy had laughed at him and stepped aside, letting him in. “It had better not be distracting like last time!” She warned. “I need to do well this exam or else Professor Cane will kill me.”

“Yeah, or just fail you in Trig.” Rory teased as he passed by her.

“Oh, shut up, Rory.”

He smiled at her and she was filled with warmth. She was glad that they were friends again. After she had found out that he wasn’t actually gay but in fact fancied her, there had been a distinct awkwardness between them. But it had finally faded now and they were back to their usual level of comfort. She had missed his stupid face. However, that had been an hour (and ten songs) ago and he hadn’t stopped breaking out into giggling fits since.

Amy had had enough. “That’s it! What is so funny?” She glared at him fiercely.

Rory’s face suddenly sobered at her wrath. “Oh, it’s, uh, nothing-” He sputtered and then paused. “Actually…” He trailed off, a smile reappearing on his face.

“Actually what, Rory?”

At that moment, the room went quiet as the song that had been currently playing ended. Suddenly, a familiar beat filled the room. Amy recognized the song and her jaw dropped.

Rory burst out laughing.

“This-?” She couldn’t even finish her sentence. She rolled her eyes and tried again. “This is the reason you’ve been laughing for the past hour? Are you serious? Because you snuck the Macarena in the middle of the playlist?”

He just continued laughing.

He’s an idiot, she thought to herself. A complete idiot. But as she watched him guffawing, she couldn’t prevent a smile from blossoming on her face at his ridiculous antics. She stared at him, feeling a warmth overtake her again, and she was stuck between joining him in laughter and smacking him with a pillow. His mouth was wide open, his eyes squeezed shut and his nose wrinkled adorably. Even when he was laughing like an idiot, he still looked gorgeous. She was suddenly in awe. When had he become to beautiful to her?

She shook her head, as though to stop that train of thought, before grabbing a pillow and throwing it at him. “Oi, Chuckles! It wasn’t that funny!”

Rory’s laughter slowly subsided. “I know, I know, but I’ve just been thinking about it for so long that-” but his explanation was suddenly interrupted when Amy’s lips pressed against his.

Amy pulled back from the kiss, looking shocked at herself. Had she just kissed him? She tried not to think about what had possessed her just then and instead licked her lips, savouring his taste.

“You… you kissed me. You kissed me.” Rory seemed too shocked to say much else.

“Don’t make a big deal of it, Rory. I just felt like it.” Thinking about it again, she smiled to herself before quickly deciding to glare at Rory. “Well, what are you staring at? We have more studying to do!”

Rory nodded, looking down at his books, but Amy noticed that he didn’t stop smiling for the rest of the night.

Amy is tossing and turning in bed when she notices a flash of light outside her window. Looking out, she sees a blonde woman walking through the grass toward the corner of the garden. I don’t know what she thinks she’s doing in my yard, thinks Amy as she pulls on a dressing gown, but whatever it is, she can forget it.

As she climbs down the stairs and opens the door, she hears the woman talking to herself.

“Oh Doctor, why couldn’t you just stay put for once? You were just here - you must’ve been.”

Amy gasps loudly at the name tumbling from the woman’s lips and the woman whirls around, shocked.

“Oh! I didn’t think anyone was home. I’m sorry!” She calls over, before muttering to herself, “So much for keeping a low profile.”

Shaking her head as if it would help her hearing, Amy says, “I’m sorry, but did you say… You were looking for the Doctor?”

The woman looks up sharply. “You know him? You know the Doctor?”

Amy nods. “Yeah, he was just here today. Saved us from-” She stops, suspicious. “How do you know the Doctor?”

The woman sighs. “I used to… We were… I’ve been looking for him. I need his help.” She looks up at the sky sadly before asking, her voice suddenly doubtful, “Wait, what did he look like? Tall, brown suit, long jacket, ridiculously great hair?”

“No, he’s-” my raggedy doctor, she thinks to herself before continuing. “He had floppy hair, and his clothes were in tatters. No jacket - just a blue shirt and a tie. Later though he added suspenders.” Amy frowns, closing her eyes and imagining him. ”And a bowtie.”

“But that would means he’s…” She trails off, looking pained. “Well, it doesn’t matter. The Doctor is the Doctor, no matter what he-” She bites her lip and looks at Amy, as though suddenly remembering she’s there. “Thanks for all your help. I need to go. I need to find him.”

“Do you want me to tell him to look for you next time I see him?” Amy asks, but the girl just shakes her head.

“No. Better not mention me to him. Who knows what will happen.” With that, she starts to leave, the moonlight shining brightly on her blue jacket.

“Wait!” Amy calls suddenly. “I never caught your name.”

The girl smiles at her softly before turning and walking away, disappearing from sight.
